Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer

The spectrometer can identify what is in a drug and alert people about whether there are any contaminants — such as fentanyl — and if so, how much is present.

The FTIR is a valuable tool in harm reduction education and substance abuse awareness. Individuals are able to make an informed decision on the drugs they choose. Reducing the number of overdoses in our community and improving the overall health and social connections of individuals who consume drugs.

DRUG TESTING INFORMATION

HOW TO GET YOUR DRUGS TESTED

Testing is a free service. We analyze samples of street drugs received in person at the Nēwo-Yōtina Friendship Centre.

We use a special machine called an FTIR spectrometer to analyze samples and check for potent substances like fentanyl, benzodiazepines, and LSD.

In-person drug checking is first come first served and takes 10-15 minutes on average. The wait could be longer if there are tests ahead of yours.

EDUCATION AND AWARENESS

We aim to educate our clients and the public about substances and safer consumption practices.

Our knowledgeable staff will answer your questions about any substances, what effects they might have, and any considerations you should make, as well as how to consume them safer.

LIMITATIONS

Please be aware that FTIR spectroscopy has some limitations. The FTIR Spectrometer shines an infrared laser at the sample to create a unique light spectrum. Our technicians use reference databases with over 15,000 substances to match your sample.

If multiple substances are detected, the software we use can also estimate the approximate amount (%) of each. These percentages are estimates and may not accurately indicate the potency/strength of your substance which can also vary per individual.

Safe consumption Site

The Nēwo-Yōtina Friendship Centre operates Canada’s only indigenous-led Harm Reduction and Safe Consumption Site. Preventing overdoses and adverse medical effects associated with drug use by supporting individuals 18+ who use drugs under the observation of a Primary Care Paramedic.
